Die Französische Verteidigung beginnt mit 1.e4 e6. Schwarz bereitet 2...d5 vor, um das Zentrum herauszufordern. Anders als 1...e5 (symmetrisch) oder 1...c5 (Sizilianisch, asymmetrisch) ist die Französische halboffen: Schwarz akzeptiert eine leicht passive Stellung im Austausch gegen eine solide Struktur und einen klaren Plan (...d5, ...c5, ...Sc6).

Nach 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 hat Weiß drei Hauptoptionen: 3.Sc3 (Winawer/Klassisch), 3.Sd2 (Tarrasch) oder 3.e5 (Vorstoß). Die Winawer (3...Lb4) fesselt den Springer und ist die aggressivste. Die Klassische (3...Sf6) ist solide. Die Tarrasch (3...Sf6 oder 3...c5) ist flexibel. Für einsteigende Competitores empfehlen wir die Klassische.
