What is the Queen's Gambit?

The Queen's Gambit begins with 1.d4 d5 2.c4. White offers the c4 pawn to divert Black's d5 pawn and gain central control. Despite the name "gambit", it is not a true sacrifice: if Black accepts (2...dxc4), White can usually regain the pawn with Qa4+ or simply enjoy the central advantage.

The Queen's Gambit has been played at the highest level for over a century. It was the favorite opening of the first World Champion Wilhelm Steinitz and remains relevant today, regularly appearing in Carlsen's games.

Strategic Principles

The Queen's Gambit is positional: White seeks long-term central control, not a quick attack. After 2.c4, the d5 pawn becomes a target. If Black defends it with ...e6, the position becomes the "QGD" (Queen's Gambit Declined). If Black captures 2...dxc4, the "QGA" (Accepted) begins, where White regains the pawn and enjoys central superiority.

Main Variants: QGD and QGA

The Queen's Gambit Declined (QGD, 2...e6) is solid and strategic. Black accepts a slightly passive position in exchange for a solid pawn structure. The Queen's Gambit Accepted (QGA, 2...dxc4) is more active: Black gives back the pawn to free their position. For starting Competidores, we recommend the QGD because it teaches fundamental positional concepts.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

The most common mistake is capturing the c4 pawn greedily in the QGD (2...dxc4) without knowing the QGA theory. The two variants are very different, and mixing them leads to inferior positions. The rule: choose QGD or QGA and learn it thoroughly, don't improvise.

Another mistake is neglecting piece development. The Queen's Gambit requires patience and methodical development. Competidores who try to force tactics before completing development usually fall into passive positions.
