What is end blocking?
End blocking is the technique of intentionally playing tiles so both ends of the chain have the same suit. When this happens, future tiles must match that suit, restricting opponent options. If the opponent doesn't have the suit, they must pass, accumulating points in hand.
Strategic Principles
Blocking is most effective when you have many tiles of the suit you want to block with, and the opponent has shown they don't have it (by passing earlier). The ideal moment is mid-to-late game, when the opponent's hand is reduced and they cannot escape the block.
How to execute a block
To execute a block: (1) identify a suit where you have many tiles; (2) wait for the opponent to pass on that suit (confirming they don't have it); (3) play a tile that leaves that suit on both ends; (4) maintain the block by always playing tiles that preserve it.
Common mistakes
The most common mistake is blocking without enough tiles to maintain it. The opponent may eventually draw the suit and break the block. Another mistake is blocking too early: in the early game, the opponent has more options to escape.
