What are doubles?
Doubles are tiles where both ends have the same number (the double-six, double-five, etc.). They are unique because they only match one suit (their own). This makes them both strategically valuable and potentially dangerous if held too long.
Strategic Principles
The general rule: play doubles early when possible, especially if you have many of the same suit. Doubles held at the end of the game become a liability: if the chain closes on a different suit, you cannot play them and accumulate points.
When to play doubles
Play doubles when: (1) you have many tiles of the same suit (reducing future flexibility); (2) the chain has that suit on both ends (rare opportunity); (3) you want to "unblock" your hand. Avoid playing doubles when you have few tiles of the suit and want to maintain flexibility.
Common mistakes
The most common mistake is "saving" doubles for the right moment, which never comes. By the time you want to play them, the chain has closed on a different suit. Another mistake is playing doubles without a plan: each double should be played with a clear strategic purpose.
