Closing Strategy in Dominoes: Complete Guide

Closing strategy is the endgame phase of dominoes. When no player can move, the points in hand determine the winner. Knowing how to plan the close from the start is what separates experts from novices.

What is the close?

The close occurs when no player can move (both ends of the chain have suits that no player has). At that moment, points in hand are counted and the player with the fewest points wins (in some variants) or the player with the most points loses (in others).

How to plan the close

Planning the close starts from the beginning: identify your low-value tiles (0-1, 0-2, 1-2) and reserve them for the endgame. Get rid of high-value tiles (5-6, 6-6, 4-6) early. This way, if the game closes, you have few points in hand.

When to force the close

Force the close when you have fewer points in hand than the opponent (which you can infer from their pass moves). If you have many low tiles and the opponent has high tiles, the close favors you. If the opposite, avoid the close at all costs.

Common mistakes

The most common mistake is ignoring the close and playing "what feels right" in each turn. Without planning, you end up with high tiles in hand at the close. Another mistake is forcing the close when you have more points than the opponent.
