What is tile counting?
Tile counting is the practice of tracking which tiles have been played and which remain in the bag or in the opponent's hand. In a standard 28-tile double-six set, each tile is unique: once played, it cannot reappear. An expert Competidor knows at all times what is possible and what is not.
Why it matters
Tile counting transforms dominoes from a game of chance into a game of skill. Without counting, you play "what you see"; with counting, you play "what you know". This information advantage is the difference between a novice and an expert Competidor.
- Número 0: aparece en 0-0, 0-1, 0-2, 0-3, 0-4, 0-5, 0-6 (7 fichas total)
- Número 1: aparece en 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 1-4, 1-5, 1-6 + 0-1 (7 fichas total)
- Aplica igual para 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 — cada número aparece en exactamente 7 fichas
- Cuando un número ha salido 6 veces, solo queda 1 ficha con ese número
How to count effectively
Effective counting requires tracking: (1) which tiles you have seen played, (2) which tiles are still in the bag, (3) which tiles your opponent likely holds. With practice, an expert can mentally reconstruct the entire game state. The key is concentration and consistent practice.
Common mistakes
The most common mistake is counting only your own tiles. An expert Competidor counts the opponent's as well, inferring from which suits they pass on. Another mistake is giving up on counting after a few turns: it must be maintained throughout the entire Match.
