What is reading opponents?
Reading opponents is the practice of inferring their hand from their moves. Each move communicates information: which suit they chose to play, which they passed on, how long they took to decide. An expert Competidor uses this information to anticipate the next moves.
Reading signals
Key signals: (1) if the opponent passes on a suit, they probably don't have it; (2) if they eagerly play a suit, they probably have many; (3) if they hesitate, they probably have a difficult decision (which suggests a complex hand); (4) if they play a tile immediately, they have a clear plan.
How to apply reading
Apply reading to: (1) decide which suit to block; (2) anticipate which tile the opponent will play; (3) force them into positions where they must pass. The combination of tile counting + opponent reading is what makes an expert Competidor nearly invincible.
Common mistakes
The most common mistake is over-interpreting signals. A single pass doesn't mean the opponent has no tiles of that suit; they may be saving them. Another mistake is failing to update your read as new information comes in. Reading must be dynamic, not static.
